GCC Bitwise Attribute

Question

¿Qué significa el __attribute__(bitwise) de GCC? El atributo no se menciona en las páginas de información de GCC-4.6. Me stubled sobre él en el archivo fuente open-iscsi-2.0.871/include/iscsi_proto.h en el proyecto abierto iSCSI, donde se utiliza como

Estoy sospechando algo relacionado con de orden de bytes pero no puedo hacer ningún sentido de la fragmento dado arriba.

Google dice here que a nivel de bit ya no significa mucho.

Esto aparentemente no es usado por GCC sino por Sparse, un analizador semántico para C usado por el kernel de Linux. Está documentado en Documentation/sparse.txt.
