Uso Codeblocks para la programación en C y últimamente comencé a preguntarme por qué alguien usaría un archivo de cabecera en C. Entiendo que se usa para declarar y/o definir estructuras de variables. Pero aquí hay algo que probé y ahora estoy confundido.

Ahora mi punto es que incluso si yo comente la declaración extern int uno; extern void show(); desde el archivo de cabecera test1.h No recibo ninguna advertencia o error durante la compilación y la ejecución. Disculpe la confusión. El código anterior funciona con y sin comentar las declaraciones en el archivo de encabezado. Así que puedo eliminar el archivo de encabezado por completo. Es inútil aquí. Mi pregunta: ¿estoy haciendo algo mal coz header no parece ser de alguna utilidad? –

Se utiliza un archivo de encabezado para que no se repita. En su ejemplo, usted no necesita escribir

extern int one; 

en headertest2.c, porque ya conseguiría incluidos en dicho archivo a través del archivo de cabecera.

No repita usted mismo no es una cosa pequeña. Imagine que tiene cien archivos que usan esta variable global (one). ¿Desea escribir extern int one en todos de ellos? ¿Qué pasa si hay 20 de estas variables y 50 funciones más? ¿Qué pasa si quiere cambiar int al uint32_t?

Seguramente, la duplicación de definiciones es tediosa y propensa a errores.

Echemos un vistazo a stdio.h por ejemplo. Sin cabeceras, tendría que copiar y pegar el siguiente código en todos los archivos que quería hacer de E/S:

Proporcionar declaraciones de funciones en una cabecera se al menos protegerse de errores estúpidos como pasar argumentos de tipos incompatibles.

Además, los encabezados se utilizan no solo para las declaraciones de funciones. ¿Qué hay acerca de struct/enum definiciones, global typedef s, macros, funciones en línea, etc.?

Finalmente, el encabezado se puede considerar como una API externa para su módulo. Uno puede echar un vistazo brevemente a un encabezado para comprender cómo usarlo sin tener que lidiar con una implementación (que a veces no está disponible en absoluto).
